Well, cats learn to play/fight when they're young and they're tussling with their litter mates. When one of them plays too rough and another one squawks about it, mom cat will go over to them and swat the offending kitten. The best way to train the cat not to bite hard is to say No! and swat the cat gently, but hard enough to get its attention. This works best when they're younger, and your cat's individual personality will determine if this will work or not.

You don't know this kitties history. He may have been abused. When I first got the two girls I currently have they were already seven and although they had come from an okay home they had been taught to be fearful and thus aggresive with each other.

He has perhaps been encouraged to be aggressive and then the owners couldn't handle him. Playing roughly with him will just encourage aggression.

I would be showing him that his new home was "safe". Do not hit him and do not give him the opportunity to bite down hard by engaging him in such behaviour. When he bites down yell 'No' and do NOT pull back from him. Cease movement. He will pause, let go and then assess the situation.

Also cat bites can be full of bacteria. If he breaks the skin ensure you put hydrogen peroxide on it so it can foam out any bad stuff.

He needs love and security. My girls slowly switched behaviour because the environment is warm and supportive and loving. Please don't hurt this cat, give him a chance.

He may be afraid when you pet him. But if you cease all aggression toward him he will learn to come around.

every animal i've had likes to play with their and bite hands...i even woke up once with my arm in younger dogs mouth. either they grew out of it, or giving them what they were after in spades worked. i would put my hand (or finger with the kitten) in their mouth past their canines until they got frustrated and quit.

if you try this, i would suggest welding gloves with an adult cat :)

also-don't get your hopes up about him becoming the perfect loving kitty. if you want an adult cat to accept affection, you have to give it to them as a kitten.
