Reports are coming in that a Russian armoured column has entered
South Ossetia, a breakaway region of Georgia, Southern Russia.

Georgia has been in conflict with the region, sympathetic to Moscow since the 90s.

Russian news reports say Russian troops in the regions capital have fired artillery rounds at Georgian troops.

Seems to be escalating rapidly

And how do you feel about that, paulc?

Military aggression from whatever source should be condemned.

Unless its on a humanitarian mission.

Ive no problem with a bomber dropping food on people.

That wasn't clear. Who do you see as the military aggressor?

weepee,

It isn't only the Ruskies who are on the move. Remember our conversations yesterday. There has been a sudden large influx and the population has greatly increased.

To be honest I know very little about the Caucasus region, thats why I thought opening this thread would be a good idea.

The Russians are saying they are there to defend ethnic Russians,
the Georgians say they are being attacked.

I believe the area has vast gas reserves, that would help.

Many of the people living in South Ossetia and ethnic Russians. They moved there when the area was part of the Soviet Union. Russia has been fomenting trouble in the area for quite a while, giving the people Russian passports and telling them they are Russian and not Georgian citizens.

Stalin was a Georgian I believe.
Anyway, Russians only make up 2% of the population, so something isnt right here.

That's odd, I would have thought that someone that has such a strong opinion about the US and Iraq would be quickly condemning Russia with the same vehemence. Why is this not the case?

Putin always did seem like a loose cannon. Looks like that was true in this case.

The United States is trying to play peacemaker here, it seems. I wonder if there will be any success to be had...lord, I hope so. The last thing we need is to be dragged into another war. Aren't we allies with Georgia?

We are not only allies, we are conducting a joint military exercise with them.

I dont think there will be any WAR between the US and Russia, lets face it, it would be the war to end all wars and would put the entire planet in jeprody.

Georgia seems to be another one of those eastern countries that wish to join the NATO club, I suppose Moscow see's itself being surrounded by Americas allies, and as usual has turned to its bully boy tactics.

You just have to remember that Putin is a career KGB Colonel. It is what his mind set is. As long as you don't think he is a liberal, you won't be surprised.

US has to help Georgia, because they sent 2,000 forces Iraq to help US. Why do WE help US in Iraq and Afghanistan? It's actually to look to keep alliance with US, and if we are in danger like this situation, we can look to US to help us.
It's certain touchstone of security guarantees of the world.

SHOW BUSH'S JUSTICE.

The Russians are shelling & driving armored formations into Georgia?
Man, I go away for a few months and all hell breaks loose.

I'm going back to bed. Somebody let me know when they reach Atlanta.
