Should a 9-year old pitcher with a 40 MPH fastball in Little League be allowed to compete? The league said that the other players are to good, and they have banned him from playing.
I don't think is even remotely reasonable. If he is that good, then he should be congratulated. The other players should learn to deal with it and learn to be good sports. The whole point of sports is to try as hard you can to win, be a good winner when you win, and congratulate the other team when they win. It is not unfair to be talented.

I agree somewhat with the banning. According to the article, his speed is frightening to the batters. Perhaps he could join another league of older players more used to faster and better pitchers.

In any event, he'll soon be playing for a major league team, if his talent is any indication. Hoperfully it'll be the White Sox, lol. The young fella reminds me of Bob Feller, whose speed was blazing and who lacked control at first until he harnessed it. When he shattered the backboard of the fence in playing catch with his dad--something he did every single day--his Dad knew it was time for the majors. He was 15 or 16 years old.

I have to agree with Ren here.

From the article:

"League attorney Peter Noble says the only factor in banning Jericho from the mound is his pitches are just too fast.

"He is a very skilled player, a very hard thrower," Noble said. "There are a lot of beginners. This is not a high-powered league. This is a developmental league whose main purpose is to promote the sport."

It seems his parents just need to find a different league for him to play in. Also, it's possible that the kid's parents may be part of the problem.

"League officials say Jericho's mother became irate, threatening them and vowing to get the league shut down.

"I have never seen behavior of a parent like the behavior Jericho's mother exhibited Wednesday night," Noble said.

Scott denies threatening any one, but said she did call the police."

She called the police over a dispute with the league?

The news should be that the kid was welcomed to an older group in recognition of his abilities rather than stigmatize him with a ban from competing with age peers.

A nine year old doesn't have enough control to throw that hard at other kids, maybe that's the reason.

But if it's because they don't want the other kids to feel bad, this is just an extension every T-Ball game five years earlier that somehow ended in a tie.

I suspect it is the second reason. Why else did they eliminate there whole team and send the other boys to other teams. They were heading to the playoffs, and the other teams boys and their teams did not want to lose.
As fot how their control is, they have had no problem with the almost the entire season. I say that let him finish the season and playoffs, and let them be allowed to play older boys next year.

Agreed completely. I didnt see anywhere that the kid was wild. Only that he threw fast.

What are they teaching kids these days? If you're losing, cry and whine, we'll make it better. Damn.....

The kid wasn't wild. He wasn't brushing kids heads with some chin music. I heard detailed interviews yesterday about the case. This all stems from parents not liking their kids failing, and wanting a giant wonderland where everyone is successful at everything. Kids need to fail to learn how to deal with it, or else the parents are setting them up for a big come down later in life.

At age 9, does ANY kid have control?
It takes YEARS to master that.

Eh, I just think of Bob Feller shattering the fence. That could be a kid's skull. That ball gets away from him one time--emergency room trip for sure.

No, he isn't Nolan Ryan --yet, and yes, the parents seem a bit like spoil sports. Something all too common when kids' sports come into play. If this was sandlot baseball, the kids could probably care less.

Maybe the kid ought to work on a knuckleball. His career would last longer besides.
